Insurance checklists, examples, and official tools

Prepare for a quote, renewal, claim, closing, or coverage review.

Practical checklists

Start with your situation

Choose the situation that matches your need.

Renewal Review more than the renewal price Compare limits, deductibles, and policy changes before renewing.

Have ready:

  • The renewal offer, current declarations pages, and carrier notices.
  • Any changes to the property, vehicles, household, valuables, or business.
  • The limits, deductibles, endorsements, and exclusions you want reviewed.

A lower premium may mean different coverage. Never cancel a policy until replacement coverage is confirmed in writing.

Flood Prepare for a flood closing Gather the property, lender, and deadline details early.

Have ready:

  • The property address, occupancy, closing date, and lender deadline.
  • The lender’s flood-insurance requirements and mortgagee information.
  • Any elevation certificate, survey, current flood policy, or prior records.
  • Applicant details and requested building and contents limits.

A map result or quote is not proof of coverage. Allow time for underwriting, payment, and written evidence.

Florida Save essential records before a storm Keep policy, property, and claim details available offline.

Do this early:

  • Save policy numbers, carrier contacts, and claim instructions offline.
  • Photograph each room, valuable items, vehicles, and business equipment.
  • Review the policies and deductibles that may apply to wind, flood, auto, or business losses.
  • Back up policies, receipts, inventories, and emergency contacts.

Carriers may restrict new coverage or changes as a storm approaches. Review early.

Claims Build a clear claim record Track damage, expenses, contacts, and deadlines in one place.

Record:

  • What happened, when it happened, and any immediate safety action taken.
  • Photos or video of damage before cleanup, when safe.
  • The claim number, adjuster details, estimates, receipts, and invoices.
  • Each conversation, promised action, and deadline.

Follow carrier instructions before discarding property or making permanent repairs. Documentation does not determine coverage.

Life Define what life insurance must cover Start with people, obligations, and time—not a product.

Define:

  • Who depends on the income and for how long.
  • Mortgage, debt, education, final expenses, and future obligations.
  • Existing personal or employer coverage and when it may end.
  • The coverage period and premium range you can maintain.

This checklist does not determine the right amount or eligibility. Product terms and underwriting vary.

Business Prepare for a business quote Organize the operations and exposures the quote requires.

Have ready:

  • Legal entity, operations, locations, revenue, payroll, and employees.
  • Buildings, equipment, inventory, vehicles, professional services, and data exposure.
  • Subcontractor use and certificates collected from others.
  • Contracts requiring specific limits, additional insured status, waivers, or bonds.

Multiple locations, unusual operations, fleets, and complex contracts may require assisted review.

How PIS helps

See how a decision moves forward

Generalized examples showing the situation, PIS role, and required confirmation.

Florida closing Flood evidence is needed before closing A lender requirement, a firm deadline, and several parties to coordinate.

How it moves forward:

  • Situation: A property, lender requirement, and closing deadline.
  • PIS role: Organize the details, clarify the requirement, and coordinate open questions.
  • Confirmation: Obtain written evidence after underwriting and payment are complete.

Growing business A new contract changes the risk The business must confirm whether its coverage meets new requirements.

How it moves forward:

  • Situation: A contract introduces new limits, terms, or operational exposure.
  • PIS role: Compare the requirements with the operation and route carrier questions.
  • Confirmation: Verify the required terms in the policy or written carrier communication.

Renewal comparison A lower-priced option changes the coverage The price is lower, but the policy is not equivalent.

How it moves forward:

  • Situation: A lower price comes with different deductibles, limits, or terms.
  • PIS role: Identify material differences and questions requiring confirmation.
  • Confirmation: Verify replacement coverage before cancelling the current policy.
